As David Moyes puts together something of a makeshift defence for perhaps the most important match in West Ham’s season, a home clash with fellow relegation rivals Southampton on Saturday, the irony of a Hammers academy product starting at the heart of the backline for another club involved in the survival scrap this weekend – Crystal Palace – won’t be lost on him.

That man is James Tomkins, who celebrates his 28th birthday today, having been sold to the south London club back in summer 2016.

The 6 foot 3 Englishman has never been the greatest of defenders, but his proven Premier League quality and ability to play at both centre-half and right-back could have been of huge benefit to the Hammers at times this season.

Which begs the question of whether the Hammers made a mistake selling Tomkins, who Transfermarkt value at just £6.3million, especially amid an era in which there appears to be a real disconnect between the fans and the team.
